Working on projects for the likes of Ellery, Camilla & Marc, Dion Lee, Josh Goot, Myer, Maybelline and Australia's Next Top Model to literally name a few, Max is truly a leader in the space. We chat with Max about how he got into make up, how he achieves his amazing bronzed look and what every girl should know when getting glammed up for the night.
What led you into
getting into hair and make up?
I started playing with hair and cutting my mates hair with no training. I was something that I just ad an eye from and started teaching myself how to do. I got offered a job with a hairdresser friend to assist them on set and from there started my interest in makeup. I can draw and pant so I loved watching the makeup artist and their shading technique. I started assisting a makeup shortly after who stated to teach me the ins and outs of product world of makeup, which obviously hit a core with me, and from that started my career.
Do you have a favourite
style of make up?
People know me for my bronzed highlighted and contoured looks but I actually love doing really bold colour work. I love working with colours and layering them together like a water painting.
You are quite famous for
your bronzed body (although this just may be because I am obsessed with it!) –
so the million-dollar question, how do you get this look?
Ha! I mix about 3 products together to get the perfect blend of bronze shimmer and glow. It’s a mix I have been experimenting with for years. Between you and I I have something in the pipeline to do with this mix, which you will just have to wait and see! lol
What has been the most
exciting shoot you have ever worked?
I get asked this question all the time and there are so many its ridiculous. I have worked in some amazing location and with some amazing faces and creative teams. For me its always the ones I creatively direct my self. There is just something exhilarating about being in control of your own creative vision!
Do you have a dream
person you would absolutely love to work with in the future?
Kylie Jenner & Gigi (watch this space)
What products could you
not live without?
My Shu Uemura Eye lash curlers, La Mer Lip Balm, YSL Radiant Touche and Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Brinze and Glow
You’ve been in the
industry a long time, and become one of the most well-known and respected MUA
in Australia, how have things changed over the years?
That’s such a good question. I think I have grown as a person and refined my art but I have stuck to my style the whole way through. With that I have built a loyal following and clientele. I was lucky enough to recognized very early in my career what my style was and I have used that as a base giving it the right tweaks and refreshes just enough to keep it interesting but never too much it wasn’t recognizable.
What is one make up tip
you wish you could pass on to every girl?
Curl your lashes and brush and fill your brows. It’s the simple things that can enhance you natural face shape with little to no effort of technique needed.
Where would you like to
see yourself in five years?
I have a 100 scenarios. The one thing that runs through them all is to be doing what I love and having the people that mean the most around me.
Beauty is all about… confidence.
I always wish I had … more time in the day.
I will never forget when … my nanna used to tickle my back with her nails for hours on end.
Life is about… being true to your self!
